Rainbows, 49ers, Play to Double-Overtime Draw

Box Score

HONOLULU – Hawai'i freshman keeper Mahie Atay posted 12 saves and stopped several late close range Long Beach State scoring attempts to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors and help the Rainbow Wahine post a draw with the 49ers in the final match of the OHANA Hotels & Resorts Shootout.

Atay, a 5-foot6 native of Kahului, Maui, came-up large just a minute into the first overtime period when she grabbed a hold of Sarah Aguilar's header shot off of Diana Sanguinetti's corner kick. The shot attempt skipped quickly off of Aguilar's head, forcing Atay to leap off of her line to snag the ball above her head with both hands.

Atay's lone goal allowed in 171 minutes and 29 seconds in the OHANA Shootout came at the 5:37 mark. All-Tournament striker Abie Curry netted the score when she ran onto a clear attempt from the Long Beach State penalty box that bounced and bounded into midfield. From there, Curry out-raced the last Rainbow Wahine defender and beat a charging Atay with a right-footer inside the lower left corner of the goal.

Hawai'i All-Tournament selection Natasha Kai registered the equalizer just 35 seconds into the second half when she beat 49er keeper Meghan Hartwyk with a leaping, one-touch, left-footed volley off of a Joelle Sugai cross. Sugai alertly picked-up a loose ball on the left flank and drove about 15 yards before slashing a cross to Kai at the top of the LBSU penalty box. The goal was her sixth of the season, upping her team scoring lead to 14 points.

The Rainbow Wahine battled all night, having to go a player short after a Hawai'i player was ejected just before the half. The 10-player Hawai'i lineup did not surrender a a score in 68 minutes following the red card thanks largely to outstanding efforts by All-Tournament defenders Jessica Uecker and Krystalynn Ontai.

Hawai'i was well represented on the All-Tournament team. Atay, Kai, Uecker, and Ontai were joined on the squad by midfielders Mia Moe and Natalie Groenewoud. 49er defenders Sanguinetti and Natalie Messina were voted All-Tourney as were their teammates Sarah Gamet and Curry. Rosette Rough rounded-out the team.

Long Beach State was declared the tournament champion as per predetermined tie-breaker procedures. With identical 1-0-1 tourney marks, the 49ers and Hawai'i were tied for best record. Long Beach State's one goal allowed edged the Rainbows, who allowed two.

Hawai'i returns to action this Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Sunday (5:00 p.m.) with non-conference matches against Weber State at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
