Rainbow Wahine Hold Their Own Block Party in Three-Game Sweep of Houston

HONOLULU -- The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (9-0) defeated the Houston Cougars (7-4) 30-17, 30-17 and 30-20 in front of a crowd of 6,560 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.

The threesome of Kim Willoughby, Lily Kahumoku and Lauren Duggins again led Hawai`i. Willoughby had 17 kills, five aces and seven digs while hitting .600. Kahumoku put down 14 kills and five blocks while digging up nine balls and Duggins added nine kills, seven blocks and a .500 hitting percentage. Karin Lundqvist and Nohea Tano also played solid at the net adding four blocks apiece.

Hawai`i outhit the Cougars .435 to .044 while outblocking them 13-3. Margaret Vakasausau and Jen Carey continued to split time at setter with Vakasausau notching 26 assists while Carey had 16.

The Rainbows will next face St. Mary's College of California tomorrow at the Stan Sheriff Center at 7 p.m. That will be their last match before opening up WAC play on Sept. 27 against Rice.
