HONOLULU – Thirty-five days after hosting its last home match, the third-ranked Warrior volleyball squad exhibited renewed energy, sweeping past No. 13 UC Irvine in three straight sets behind the outstanding play of 2001 National Player of the Year
Costas Theocharidis, who posted his third double-double performance of the season to spark the Men of War to the 30-28, 30-23, 30-18 win at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Theocharidis, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Orestiada, Greece, posted match highs in kills (16) and digs (12) while hitting .593 with no errors in 27 swings with seven block assists to enjoy another fine outing. Hawai'i's last double-double performance came way back on Feb. 2, when Theocharidis had 17 kills and 12 digs against Pacific in Stockton, Calif.
Junior outside hitter Eyal Zimet also played well, recording 10 kills with just two errors in 21 attempts to hit .381. Senior middle blocker Dejan Miladinovic led all players with nine total blocks to increase his school-record career total blocks mark up to 675.
The month of March has been a long one for the Warrior volleyball team, as they played eight consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation road matches and covered over 15,000 miles over three seperate road trips. Fortunately the Warriors went 5-3 over that span to earn a league play-off berth. Tonight's match opened a six match homestand to close-out the regular season.
The Warriors and Anteaters return to action tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. The match will be televised live, state-wide on K5, “The Home Team.” The webcast can be accessed through the Hawai'i athletics website, at http://uhathletics.hawaii.edu.
