HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (10-20) defeated the Hawai`i Pacific Sea Warriors (17-21) 14-4 in seven innings at the Les Murakami Stadium in the fifth day of the Ohana Rainbow Easter Tournament. The game was called in the seventh due to the tournament's 10-run rule.
Chris George (2-2) got the victory while Keola McCallum (1-3) got the loss. The ticketed attendance for the day was 2,271.
The game saw two rain delays, before the game started (33 minutes) and in the bottom of the fourth inning (32 minutes), with the game still scoreless. But when the rain stopped, the Rainbows started, as they scored five runs in the fourth.
The Sea Warriors then responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to pull within two runs. But that didn't last long as Hawai`i got the big inning, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 12-3.
After the Sea Warriors got one run in the top of the seventh, the 'Bows closed out the books as Gregg Omori and Kevin Gilbride drove in a run each to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Lane Nogawa and Julian Russell led the 'Bows with three RBI a piece. Nogawa ended the night 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Russell went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Tim Montgomery added a 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored and two RBI while Omori, Gilbride and Derek Honma also had two hits each. Chris George also helped with a solid pitching performance, going 6.1 innings with one earned run, nine strikeouts and just two walks.
In earlier action, UC Riverside and San Jose State picked up victories over Lewis-Clark State and Birmingham-Southern. UC Riverside broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with four runs to eventually take the game 7-4. San Jose State clinched the tournament title with their win today as Matt Durkin pitched a two-hitter to lead the Spartans to a 12-0 win that was called due to the 10-run rule. Ryan Adams hit a grand slam in the first inning that ignited the Spartan offense.
The tournament continues tomorrow as San Jose State plays their final game of the tournament in the morning game against Lewis-Clark State. Birmingham-Southern and UC Riverside will then meet in the second game before UH-Hilo and Hawai`i meet in the nightcap.
