CORVALLIS, Ore.—Hawaii dug itself in a deep hole and couldn't quite recover, in falling to Oregon State, 62-50, in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament Thursday at Gill Coliseum. Felicia Ragland scored 24 points and Oregon State blitzed the Rainbow Wahine with a 16-0 run in the first half to end UH's post-season title hopes.
The Rainbow Wahine finished with a 23-8 overall record for their third straight 20-win season and their sixth in the last seven seasons. Oregon State (17-14) moves on to face Oregon in second round action on Sunday.
A stagnant offense did UH in during the first half. Poor shooting (29 percent), mixed with sloppy ball handling (12 turnovers) netted just seven UH points in the first 16 minutes of the game. Karena Greeny bucket with 14.37 made the score, 9-7. After that the Rainbow Wahine offense disappeared. UH didn't score for more the next 11 minutes, while the Beavers scored 16 unanswered points. UH found itself in a 25-7 hole with 4:03 left in the half after a Ragland layup.
UH's offense woke up with 10 points in the last two-plus minutes, to make the deficit 31-17 heading into the locker room.The second half thought started off with the same story. UH struggled to score, while OSU scored the first six points of the half to build a 20-point lead.
However, the Rainbow Wahine refused to quit. Consecutive 3-pointers by Chelsea Wagner cut the lead to 46-38 with 8:30 left. That's as cEnter All-America guard Felicia Ragland who took over, scoring the Beavers next 11 points to extend the lead back to double-digits and keep the Rainbow Wahine at bay.
Wagner, making a return to her home state where she was the high school player of the year, led UH with 16 points. All four of her 3-pointers game in the second half as she set a new single-season 3-point record for freshman (37).
Senior point guard Janka Gabrielova added 14 points and with two treys, set a new single-season record with 49 3-pointers this season. Karena Greeny had seven points, six rebounds and three assists in her final game as a Rainbow Wahine.
