HONOLULU -- The University of Hawaii Rainbow baseball team (6-7) fell to the Brigham Young Cougars (5-11) 4-3 in the series finale Saturday at the Les Murakami Stadium. The ticketed attendance was 2,581 with
Sean Yamashita suffering his first loss of the season for Hawaii. BYU reliever Paul Jacinto picked up the win while Tyler Dabo got the save for the Cougars.
BYU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead when Matt Carson singled in a run in the first, then hit a two-run home run in the third. Carson also made the defensive play of the game as he threw out Arthur Guillen at home on an attempted sacrafice fly by Brent Cook.
The Rainbows then battled back as they loaded the bases in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. But Hawaii was only able to get one run each to tie the game at three. The teams stayed tied going into the final inning when Ranger Wiens gave the Cougars the lead by driving in an unearned run. Hawaii then got the bases loaded again in the bottom of the ninth, but Dabo closed out the inning with two strikeouts to get Brigham Young the win. The 'Bows left 13 total runners on base in the game.
In his first starting appearance, Chris George had an up-and-down game, as he gave up three runs early before facing 15 batters without giving up a hit between the third and seventh inning. George ended the day with a 6.1 inning outing, giving up three earned runs while striking out seven batters. Sean Yamashita gave up no earned runs and just two hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
Hawaii will next face UC-Irvine in a three-game series starting Friday, March 1 at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
