'Bows Lose Heartbreaker to Hornets in 13 Innings; Pribble and Quaglieri Pitch Well in Loss

Box Score

HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (2-4) fell to the Sacramento State Hornets (1-1) 5-2 in 13 innings in front of 2,962 fans at the Les Murakami Stadium. The game was the second game of a three-game series.

Sacramento State started out the game with two unearned runs in the first inning off a Cortland Wilson error. Hawai'i responded with a run in the bottom of the first and another in the seventh inning to tie the game. The two teams then hit a standstill as they went all the way into the 13th inning before the Hornet's Casey Fuller broke the tie with a two-run homer. Chris Kinsey then drove in an insurance run for Sacramento State before the game ended.

Aaron Pribble, the Rainbows' starter, pitched five innings without an earned run, allowing just two hits. William Quaglieri then came in relief and pitched seven innings scoreless before giving up the game-winning two-run homerun in the top of the 13th. Despite his great performance, Quaglieri was credited with the loss.

Scooter Martines and Lane Nogawa led the Rainbow bats tonight as Martines hit 2-for-5 with an RBI and Nogawa went 2-for-4 with a run scord. Arthur Guillen provided the other RBI on his lone hit of the night.

Jeff Groeger came in relief for the Hornets, pitching seven innings with just one earned run and seven strikeouts, earning him the victory.

The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. Hawai`i is scheduled to start freshman Ricky Bauer against the Hornets' Chris Kinsey.
