Men's Hoops Tame Panthers, 81-65

Box Score

HONOLULU - Playing at home for the first time in nearly a month, the University of Hawaii men's basketball team returned to the court victoriously after its 81-65 victory over Eastern Illinois, Friday night, on the opening night of the Adidas Festival. A Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 6,133 watched as four Rainbow Warriors scored in double figures, led by All-American candidate Carl English's 19 points.

English scored in double figures for the fourth time this season after his 7-of-16 performance from the field. Haim Shimonovich rebounded from a zero point outing against San Diego State, last week, to post his first double-double of the season (18 pts./13 rebs.). The big man finished 8-of-12 from the field in 35 minutes.

Mark Campbell scored a season-high 15 points and dished out six assists. Guard Jason Carter came off the bench and scored 11 points.

The story of the first half was UH's domination of the boards and EIU's dismal shooting. The 'Bows controlled the glass taking a 24-11 rebounding edge, including a 10-4 advantage on the offensive glass. The Panthers shot just 33.3 percent from the field and missed 10-of-13 3-point attempts. UH's biggest lead of the game was 25 (38-13) at the 3:03 mark of the first half on a Campbell breakaway layup after a Shimonovich steal.

It was a different story in the second half as the Panthers chipped away into the UH lead behind the play of Henry Domercant, the nation's sixth leading scorer at 25.6 points per game. EIU used a 13-0 run during a four minute stretch to close to within 47-36 with 14:27 to play. Domercant scored 10 of the team's first 15 second half points en route to 21 in the period.

Domercant finished 10-of-26 shooting from the field, including 2-of-7 from beyond the arc. Forward Jesse Mackinson chipped in with 12 points.

In the opening game of the Adidas Festival, New Orleans defeated Cal Poly, 89-75. Hector Romero scored a game-high 38 points, including 20 in the first half, and grabbed 14 rebounds. Cal Poly's Shane Schilling had a team-high 25 in the loss.

The 'Bows next face New Orleans, Saturday, in the championship game of the Adidas Festival. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. Cal Poly and New Orleans play at 6:00 p.m.
