Aztecs Use Second Half Run to Beat UH

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Despite Carl English's 16 points and 12 rebounds, the University of Hawaii dropped a 60-49 decision to San Diego State, Saturday, at Cox Arena. The junior from Newfoundland, Canada, posted his third career double-double in a losing effort.

Forward Phil Martin scored 14 points, nine of which came in the deciding second half. Reserve guard Jason Carter added 10 points in 15 minutes. The difference in the game was in the post where UH center Haim Shimonovich was held scoreless while SDSU starter Mike Mackell scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

In the first half, the Rainbow Warriors erased an eight-point Aztec lead (17-9) with a 13-0 run, over a five-minute and three-second period. English scored eight of those points, with the help of two 3-pointers. But SDSU closed out the half with a Tony Bland lay-up and Steve Sir trey to go into the half tied at 22.

UH dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Aztecs 25-15. However, the 'Bows shot just 26 percent from the field and committed an uncharacteristic nine turnovers.

The Aztecs scored the first five minutes in the second half. But a six-point UH run, with consecutive buckets by Nkeruwem Akpan, put the 'Bows back ahead 33-32 with 13:26 to play. That would be UH's final lead of the game as the Aztecs used a 17-7 run over the next eight minutes to seal the victory.

Bland finished with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor.

UH returns to Honolulu to host the Adidas Festival, Dec. 20-21 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
