HONOLULU—The University of Hawaii Wahine basketball team played its first conference home game of the year and picked up a convincing 81-67 win over San Jose State Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Five different Wahine scored in double figures as UH improved to 9-2 and 2-0 in the WAC.
UH's perimeter game and a freshman reserve helped key the victory as UH broke the game open during a critical 9-minute span in the first half. UH led just 17-13 seven minutes into the game and their top two guns Christen Roper and Natasja Allen already riding the bench with foul trouble. However backcourt mates April Atuaia and Janka Gabrielova and wing player Karena Greeny spurred a 19-2 run that put the Spartans (7-5, 2-1) down for the count. UH hit five of its eight 3-pointers in the first half and forced San Jose State to 7-of-33 shooting, including just seven combined points from guards Atari Parker and Cricket Williams.
Meanwhile, freshman reserve Kim Willoughby filled in any holes at the post with her first career double-double (16 points and 15 rebounds). Willoughby had eight rebounds by halftime as UH held a 30-15 advantage on the boards.
UH led 40-17 at the break and extended its lead to as many as 26 points. A desperate Spartan squad cut the led to 11 points in the second but would get no closer.
Gabrielova led the Wahine with 21 points and six assists, Atuaia added 12 points and rebounds, and Greeny and Roper each chipped in 10 points. UH shot 52 percent to SJSU's 32 and out-rebounded the Spartans 51-38.
UH looks to make it six in a row when they host SMU in WAC action on Friday, January 11. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
