BOISE, Idaho – For the second game in a row, Hawaii hung on down the stretch, as the Rainbow Warriors edged Boise State, 64-62, Saturday night before a season-high BSU Pavilion crowd of 6,806. The win extended UH's win streak to seven games, the longest in 12 years, and improve their record to 13-2, 4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Guard Predrag Savovic and forward Mindaugas Burneika each converted two free throws in the final minute to seal the victory. Savovic's two free throws with 10.4 seconds were the difference in the game. The reigning WAC player of the week, finished with a team-high 22 points, including a 25-foot bank shot from the top of the key with 2:00 remaining. That shot snapped a 10-0 BSU run, in which the Broncos rallied to tie the game at 57.
Burneika finished with 11 points, while forward Carl English also added 11 points, all of which came in the first half. Guard Mark Campbell dished out five assists, as he played in front of more than 30 friends and family who traveled from Washington and Oregon.
As a team, the 'Bows shot 51.1 percent from the field, including 7-of-18 from beyond the 3-point arc.
UH's 13-2 record to start the year is its best under head coach Riley Wallace. Its 4-0 WAC mark is also its best since the 1993-94 season and the two-game road sweep is the first in four years.
After racing out to a 37-30 halftime advantage, Hawaii built its lead into double digits early in the second half. UH maintained its lead despite being in foul trouble for the remainder of the game. English picked up his fourth foul with 12:15 left, which forced him to sit on the bench until the closing minutes. Burneika's fourth foul came with nearly 10:00 remaining.
With Hawaii holding on to a 51-45 lead with 7:40 left, guard Mike McIntyre hit consecutive 3-pointers to push its lead back to double-digits. The Broncos then went on its 10-0 run until Savovic's dramatic shot.
UH returns home where they will host Louisiana Tech, Jan. 10 and SMU, Jan. 12.
