Kimo Tuyay to pull-off an upset in their first road match of the season against No. 2 Stanford, 36-34, 23-30, 30-23, 27-30, 15-12, before a largely pro-Hawaii crowd of 382 at Burnham Pavillion.
Theocharidis put-down a season-high 33 kills while hitting an incredible .537 to lead the Warriors to victory. The Greek national began his night quickly, recording seven kills with no errors as Hawaii won game one, 36-34. After dropping six kills in a game two loss, and five in the Warriors' game three win, Theocharidis exploded for 17 kills over the final two sets to carry the hitting load. Theocharidis current career-high for kills in a match came against Pepperdine last Mar. 9, when he put-down 34 kills.
Tuyay, the reigning MPSF Co-Freshman of the Year, set a new personal career high, with 76 assists, as four Warriors put-up double-digit kill totals. Tuyay quarterbacked Hawaii to a .437 team attack percentage in helping his squad open the 2002 conference schedule with a win. Tuyay's previous career high was 71 against No. 11 Lewis in the Outrigger Invitational 11 days ago.
Junior captain Eyal Zimet enjoyed a fine all-around night, recording 14 kills while hitting .360 and also putting-up four block assists. Fellow outside hitter Jose Delgado had 13 kills of his own, hitting .435 while tying Dejan Miladinovic (11 kills, .409 attack percentage) for a match-high six block assists.
The Warriors and Cardinal will complete their season series tomorrow when they meet again at 7:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. HST) at Burnham Pavillion.
