HONOLULU – One night after absorbing the Hawai'i volleyball program's first opening night loss in over a decade, the Warriors rebounded with an energetic performance to record a three-game sweep of Loyola-Chicago behind strong efforts from
Costas Theocharidis,
Dejan Miladinovic and
Kimo Tuyay.
All-American outside hitter Theocharidis posted a team-high 16 kills and hit .353 a night after putting-down a match-high 29 kills. The Greek national opened the evening by registering eight kills in 15 swings to lead the Warriors to a .421 hitting clip in their 30-28 win in game one.
On the season, Theocharidis has been credited with 45 kills in seven games, good for a 6.43 kills per game average.
Senior middle Miladinovic energized the Warriors by posting eight block assists and eight kills while hitting a .583 on the match. His presence at the net sparked Hawai'i to a fine defensive night, as they put-up 14.5 team blocks, to Loyola-Chicago's two. The three-time All-MPSF performer currently leads the Warriors with a .600 hitting percentage.
Hawai'i sophomore setter Tuyay rebounded from a tough season-opener to enjoy a well-rounded evening. The 2001 MPSF Co-Freshman of the Year hit a perfect 1.000 with four kills in as many attempts, and also posted five block assists, while dishing-out 39 assists.
Tuyay's setting allowed the Warriors to hit over .400 in each of tonight's three sets. Hawai'i hit .421 in game one, and followed-up by posting hitting percentages of .433 and .407 to complete the sweep.
Junior outside hitter Tony Ching chipped-in with 11 kills on a .429 hitting percentage.
The win overshadowed a another strong performance by Loyola-Chicago's Brad Stoub, who had 24 kills on the night. Stoub put-down 26 kills in the Ramblers season-opening win last night.
The Warriors will return to action next weekend, when they host the 8th Annual Outrigger Hotels Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center. The action runs Jan. 17-19, and will feature national powers UCLA, Penn State and Lewis.

WARRIORS ANNOUNCE SCHEDULE CHANGE FOR NEXT WEEK'S OUTRIGGER INVITE
HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball program has announced that start times for the upcoming Outrigger Hotels Invitational have been changed.
The Invitational is scheduled for January 17-19 at the Stan Sheriff Center, and will include the Warriors, UCLA, Lewis, and Penn State.
There will be two matches played each day, starting at 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Thur., Jan. 17, and Fri., Jan. 18.
The matches scheduled for Saturday have been moved to 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
