HONOLULU—Sophomore striker
Arlene Devitt scored the game-winning goal five minutes into the first overtime to help lift the University of Hawai'i women's soccer squad to a 2-1 win over Sacramento State in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi season opener at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, Friday night.
Devitt received a through ball from fellow sophomore Liz Lusk and hammered a right-footed shot from 12 yards out that found the back of net near the left post, past Hornet goalie Amy Seely.
The Wahine (1-0-0) doubled the Hornets (0-1-0) in the shot column, 18-9, yet were saved from the jaws of defeat by the timely goalkeeping of newcomer Jennifer Churchill. Churchill a transfer from DeAnza Junior College, twice snuffed the attempts by Hornet Lisa Wrightsman who found herself in one-on-one breakaway situations—once during the last play of regulation and again in the opening minutes of overtime.
Wrightsman tied the score for the Hornets with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation when she took a pass from Naomi Ennis and made a sliding flick shot near the keepers box that elevated over an outstretched Churchill.
The Wahine, however, were in control for most of the game. The team got off to a quick start, scoring 10 minutes into the season, as redshirt freshman Pam Fong took a deflection off a Wahine corner kick and hit a shot that ricocheted into the left corner.
UH next plays Wahine players from the past in an alumnae match at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 2.
