SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The No. 11 University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine (26-4) defeated the WAC tournament's No. 3 seed San Jose State (22-7) 30-22, 30-24, and 30-22 at the Event Center Sunday to win the WAC tournament title.
Kim Willoughby led the Wahine with 26 kills, 17 digs and a .511 hitting percentage. She is now just one kill short of tying the school record for kills in a season (688 by Teee Williams in 1988). Maja Gustin also added 18 kills, while Lauren Duggins had nine kills and 12 digs, while hitting .533. Margaret Vakasausau added a double-double with 52 assists and 12 digs.
Willoughby started the match on fire, nailing her first three attempts for kills to put the Wahine up 3-0. Hawaii continued to put it on, taking a 10-5 lead before San Jose State was forced to call a timeout. The lead extended to 17-9 before Willoughby was taken out of the game with a minor injury. But Gustin made up the difference, taking the Wahine lead to 21-12 before Willoughby was able to reenter the game. The Spartans started to come back, cutting the lead to 26-20. But the Wahine fought on to take the game 30-22.
San Jose State started hot in game 2, taking a quick 5-0 lead to force head coach Dave Shoji to call a timeout. The Spartans kept rolling, taking a 10-4 lead before Hawaii reeled off five straight points to cut the lead to one. SJSU took a 3-0 run before the Wahine took four straight points to tie the game at 14. The teams traded points before UH went on a quick 5-0 run to take the lead at 20-16. San Jose State came back to tie the match at 22 and 23. A 6-1 Wahine run put the Wahine up 29-24, but the Spartans wouldn't give up, taking three straight points before a Willoughby smash ended the second game 30-24.
The third game also stayed competitive as the teams started out to a 6-6 tie. The Wahine then went up 15-10 at the media timeout before the Spartans fought back to cut the UH lead to two. The teams continued to trade small runs before the Wahine took the final game 30-22. Following the match the team jumped on a flight back to Hawaii before having to fly back up to Stockton, Calif., for the Banker's Classic at the University of Pacific. They will face the No. 16 Utah Utes in the first round of the classic on Friday, Nov. 23. The Utes beat No. 18 BYU and No. 8 Colorado State en route to the Mountain West tournament title this past weekend.
