Box Score Box Score

HONOLULU -- In the championship game of the Nike Tip-Off Tournament, Hawai`i overcame a poor first half shooting effort to rally past Drake, 74-63, Sunday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. With the victory, the Rainbow Warriors captured its first pre-season tournament since winning the 1999 Rainbow Classic.

Tournament Most Outstanding Player Carl English and senior guard Mike McIntyre paced the 'Bows with 22 points a piece. English, who scored 42 points in the two games, played the shooting guard position in place of senior Predrag Savovic, who is waiting clearance from the NCAA regarding his eligibility.

McIntyre, who has been hampered by a bruised thigh, came off the bench to hit a team-high four 3-pointers and convert on all six of his free throw attempts. Phil Martin was the other Rainbow Warrior in double-figures, scoring 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

UH struggled from the floor in the first half, missing more than two thirds of its shots, including 10-of-11 3-point attempts. Drake, on the other hand, didn't fare much better, connecting on 37 percent from the floor. After holding a 11-3 lead after the first 5:00 of the game, the 'Bows scored just four points over the next 13 minutes, including an eight minute scoreless stretch. Despite the horrid shooting, Hawai`i found themselves down by just nine (26-17) at the half.

UH came out of the locker room with a hot hand, outscoring the Bulldogs 10-1 on three Martin jumpers to tie the game at 27. With the score tied at 38 midway through the half, Hawaii used an 11-0 run to take a comfortable 49-38 lead. UH pushed its lead to as much as 16 points. The 'Bows shot 56.3 percent from the floor including a 5-for-8 performance from long distance.

Luke McDonald led the Bulldogs with a game-high 26 points.

English, along with teammate Mindaugas Burneika were named to the all-tournament team. Rounding out the team were McDonald, Andry Sola (Drake), Terrance Winston (Norfolk State) and Donald Cole (Sam Houston State).

UH travels to the island of Hawai`i to take part in the Big Island Tournament hosted by UH-Hilo, Thanksgiving weekend. Hawai`i faces Mercer in first round action, Friday, Nov. 23 at 5:00 p.m.
