HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i and San Jose State battled into overtime for a spot in next week's Western Athletic Conference championship tournament before the Wahine pulled away on a game-winning goal by sophomore scoring sensation
Arlene Devitt in the 101st minute of play.
Devitt's game-winner was set up when midfielder Joelle Sugai sent fellow freshman Pam Fong through with a long pass toward the left corner flag. Fong drove a few yards and sent a left-footed cross to Devitt, who turned right and burried a low, hard right-footed shot inside the near post.
Fong earned her first career assist for her effort. Sugai was also credited with an assist, her fourth of the year.
With the score, Devitt matched school records for points (23) and goals (10) in a season, and goals in a match. The shot, Devitt's 11th of the night, also set a new school mark for shots in a match and also helped the Kapaa, Kauai native set a new Hawai'i record for shots in a season, with 60.
The Spartans drew first blood when Kerry Blaschke scored off a loose ball that spun free off a deflection off a Wahine defender at 4:46.
Hawai'i rebounded at 11:08 when Devitt drilled a shot off a deflection of her own shot from about 12 yards out.
The contest was a physical one, but not unexpected, considering that a spot in the upcoming conference post-season tournament was at stake. 33 fouls, including three ejections and four cautions were handed-out.
The Wahine finish their 2001 regular season on Saturday when they host Fresno State at 4:00 p.m. at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Western Athletic Conference championship tournament runs next week in Dallas, Tex. Regular-season league champ SMU will host.
