Box Score
HOUSTON, Tex. – The Wahine soccer team dropped its first Western Athletic Conference match of the young season, 3-2 in overtime against a spirited Rice squad despite goals by defender
Carmel Hurley and striker
Arlene Devitt.
Hawaii drew first blood just 5 minutes and 23 seconds into the match when senior Hurley received a long through ball from Tiffany Makue and drove home a left-footed rocket to post her second score in as many contests.
Initiating her attack with a long run from her spot at right defender, Hurley collected Makue's pass and cut into the Rice penalty box to score her second career goal. The assist was Makue's second of the year.
Just before the halftime intermission, the Owls rebounded with a score of their own, when Kelly Potysman connected on a direct kick from just outside the Hawaii penalty box. Rice was awarded the free kick after a Wahine defender was whistled for a foul.
After the break, the Wahine regained the lead when sophomore Arlene Devitt ripped a shot just inside the far upper corner of the Rice goal. Devitt received a well paced and placed pass from Veronica Flores to post her team-leading fifth goal of the season. The assist was Flores' team-high third of the season.
Near the midway point of the second period, Rice answered with the equalizer, when Potysman struck with her second score of the day. Potysman dribbled through two Hawaii defenders to beat keeper Jennifer Churchill.
For the fourth time this season, the Wahine extended to overtime, after having being outshot, 14-to-13 in regulation.
Only four minutes, 10 seconds into the extra period, the Owls put away the game winner, when Sarah Yoder made good on a shot attempt from the top of the Hawaii penalty box.
Next for the Wahine is a non-conference contest at Stephen F. Austin tomorrow, in Nagadoches, Tex.
