David Throop

David Throop begins his first season as associate coach for the Rainbow Wahine Water Polo program. Throop brings nearly two decades of coaching experience from the talent-rich Southern California region.

"I'm thrilled to welcome David to the Rainbow Wahine Water Polo program,”  head coach Maureen Cole said. “He brings a wealth of technical and tactical knowledge and has a proven ability to develop the type of student-athletes we are looking for at the University of Hawai'i.”

Throop added: “I'm excited for the opportunity to work with the type of world-class student-athletes represented at the University of Hawai'i and look forward to building upon an already rich history along with a great, young coach in Maureen Cole.”

For the last 12 years he has served as the head women's water polo coach at Coronado High School in California. During that time he built a powerhouse with his women's squad winning five California
Interscholastic Federation championships, including three straight from 2008-10. For his efforts, he was named CIF San Diego Coach of the Year four times.

Over his career, he helped his student-athletes at Coronado with college recruitment and helped place a number of them in college programs across the nation —both major and sub-major.

His experience at Coronado also included serving as associate head coach of the men's water polo and head coach of the men's and women's swimming teams. Throop led the men's swimming squad to a pair of CIF championships in 2002 and '03 and was named CIF Coach of the Year in those same years.

Throop has also been heavily involved with USA Water Polo, serving as an Olympic Development Coach for seven years (2001-07). His work with ODP has been recognized on a trio of occasions with Regional Development Coach of the Year honors in 2003, '04 and '10.

His experience also extends all the way to the youth level after heading the Coronado Aquatics Club since 2000. While there he helped train swimmers ranging from 7-years-old to college-age, while also running seasonal water polo camps and clinics with current US water polo national team members

Throop, 40, is a 2006 graduate of San Diego State where he earned his bachelor's degree in English.
