The Island Showdown Trophy debuted in 2017 and is awarded to the winner of the University of Hawai‘i and UNLV football game.
Sponsored by The California Hotel, the trophy includes both a pineapple - a Vegas-style gold pineapple - and a variation of the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. Las Vegas has earned the nickname “The Ninth Island” for its long-standing popularity with Hawai‘i visitors and transplants.
UNLV and Hawai‘i first squared off in football Oct. 25, 1969 and played 25 times until 2016. The teams competed as conference foes in the old Western Athletic Conference (1996-97) and continued the rivalry when UH joined the Mountain West in 2012.
