Head Coach- Bob Coolen
Pitcher-Kaia Parnaby
Opening Statement, Coach
(Coolen) Game we just had against Washington was a good pitcher’s duel up until the sixth inning. And then in the sixth inning, it’s tough when you put your first batter on every inning, and try to get out of the innings. We did a good job early on, but in that inning, they were able to score a couple runs, put the pressure on us. And their pitcher did a very good job of keeping our hitters off balance.
What did Inglesby do that you found to be effective against your hitters?
(Coolen) She stayed outside, early on. We didn’t make the adjustments to the outside pitch very well, then she came with her change up later-on and kept our hitters off-balance that way. So she did a nice job. The pitching coach did a nice job because it’s not her…it’s all called from the side. The person did a nice job staying outside early on and we tried to make an adjustment to that. And then the off-speed pitches started to come and we didn’t check ourselves. She did a nice job, and then she’d reel it back and really bring the ball once she showed her change up a couple of times.
Were the changes between her pitches pretty dramatic?
(Coolen) As the game went on, it became a plus for her that she was able to change speeds. At the beginning, she was just getting our hitters on the outside and we weren’t really making the adjustments. Then we made the adjustments and started making contact and whoever was calling the game was going to the change-ups. Because we were getting a little aggressive on the pitch selection, and that’s where the change-up does sort of… you need to check yourself often, and try to think like the pitcher in regards to is a change up going to come…and that’s when you get a little slow with your bat. She did a nice job at mixing it.
Kaia, obviously still dominant, you don’t usually see the lead-off hitter get on as often…Any particular reason?
(Parnaby) They’re definitely a strong hitting team and you know… I struggled getting used to the umpire’s strike zone a little. There were pitches I thought I had that he didn’t like. I guess I wasn’t hitting my spots as well as I was yesterday.
In the sixth inning, they finally got to you….was it any fatigue on your part, or was it just one of those deals they finally broke through.
(Parnaby) They’re a good hitting team… anytime they get twice or three times through the line-up, they’re going to be able to catch up and definitely know what’s coming. They adjusted well to the outside ball and those are the ones they hit….they’re a good hitting team.
Who are you going to throw tonight?
(Coolen) We don’t know who won this next game yet, have no idea. It all depends on this next game, what we’re going to do. We’ve already played Portland state twice, Minnesota once. So we’ve rode her the whole year, we’ve got a game in between in a couple hours. It won’t make any difference to go with her again, and try to get to tomorrow. And then tomorrow is a whole different day with the two pitchers that we have. But you know this year I’m not into platooning our pitchers, so we’ll just play it by ear and see who we’re going to play. I’m sure Kaia will want the ball later on, since it might be our last game… I know the seniors don’t want to sit on the bench.
