Post Game Quotes
New Mexico State vs. Hawai‘i
Oct. 22, 2011
New Mexico State head coach DeWayne Walker
General comment:
“It was just tough. They’re such a good offensive football team and they have a good defense, too. You just have to match what they do. We just couldn’t get close enough. When we needed a stop, we couldn’t get a stop. When we did get a stop, we couldn’t score a touchdown. We could never get the offense and defense on the same page where we were matching what they were doing.”
On New Mexico State’s quarterback situation:
“(Matt Christian’s) shoulder was a little dinged up and we went with the freshman (Travaughn Colwell). Then he hurt his foot, so we had to go back to Christian. These guys are battlers. You don’t want to lose a game, but I thought our guys fought their butts off. We will take this, learn from it and get ready for next week.”
On Hawai‘i’s running game:
“It’s something we definitely were concerned with. They throw the ball so much and they get you so concerned with the passing game. They hit you with a big run here and there. We didn’t do a good enough job stopping their running backs.”
On Hawai‘i’s blocked punt return for a touchdown in the first half:
“There were a lot of keys plays. You don’t want to blame it on one play, but it definitely had an influence on the outcome of the game.”
Hawai‘i head coach Greg McMackin
General comment:
“It’s good to get a win. We have a lot of things we need to get better at on all sides of the ball. I think there are some guys who really played well, but we need to get better as a football team. I just never felt like we finished. We talked about that at halftime.”
On New Mexico State:
“New Mexico State, we knew they were a really good football team. People around here don’t think they’re very good, but they’ve put together a bunch of good athletes and they came to play.”
On future opponents:
“We have to get better to play the people we’re going to be playing in the future.”
On Hawai‘i’s special teams play:
“If everyone wants to focus on PAT and field goals, I got the remedy for that, we’ll just go for two. If people want to write about that, I’ll be responsible for the PAT and Dick (Tomey, UH’s special teams coach) can handle the rest of it. I don’t like people attacking our coaches when they’re working their ass off. I’m really upset with it.”
On moving forward after the victory:
“It’s a win. Let’s turn the page. We are 4-3, we still have our goals ahead of us. I’m going to look at the positive things. I’m tired of hearing about the negative.”
