Otis Named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week

LAS VEGAS – University of Hawai'i senior linebacker Jamih Otis was selected as the Old Trapper Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after helping lead the Rainbow Warriors to a 29-19 victory over New Mexico State last Saturday.
 
The Las Vegas native spearheaded a Warrior defense that shut out the New Mexico State offense in the second half to help secure UH's first win of the season. After UH did not force a turnover in the first two games of the year, Otis was in on two of UH's three takeaways on Saturday versus the Aggies.

He recovered a fumble on NMSU's opening drive of the game which UH ultimately parlayed into an offensive touchdown to take a quick 7-0 lead. Meanwhile, late in the game, with the Aggies driving to get back into the game, Otis picked off a pass in UH territory to help seal the victory. The senior also added a team-high six tackles and a pass break-up.

The weekly honor was the first for a UH player this year and the third career honor for the senior linebacker who was also recognized during the 2024 and '25 seasons.

UH will have a bye this weekend before getting back to action with a Mountain West road game at Wyoming on Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is 1 pm MT/9 am HT.
