Rainbow Wahine Sailors Take Second In Team Race, Third In Fleet Race At PCCSC Championships

LAKE WHATCOM, Wash. The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine sailing team completed a successful weekend at the PCCSC Women's Championships hosted by Washington and Western Washington, claiming a runner-up finish in the team race and third place in the fleet racing.

Action began Friday, April 10, with the PCCSC Women's Team Race Championship, which was sailed in FJ boats. Following a brief on-shore postponement due to a lack of morning wind, a southwesterly breeze filled in around 11:30 a.m. before steadily shifting southeasterly throughout the day. The Rainbow Wahine compiled an impressive 5-1 record in head-to-head action, placing second and falling only to the regatta champion Stanford Cardinal, who posted a perfect 6-0 mark. Competing for Hawaii in the team races were skippers Martha Schuessler, Stella Taherian, Kahlia Bailey, and Elizabeth Fourney, alongside crews Amanda Turner, Elin Reigstad, Ann Tokoyoda, and Peyton Lieser.

The weekend concluded on April 11-12 with the Charley Dole PCCSC Women's Fleet Race Championship. In a competitive 12-team field, the Rainbow Wahine secured a third-place overall finish with 88 total points, finishing just one point behind second-place Western Washington (87 points) and trailing the regatta champion Stanford (49 points). The Rainbow Wahine finished with a flurry, placing top three in five of its final six races.

Hawai'i was bolstered by a strong showing in Division B, where they took second place in their grouping with 37 points across 10 races. Taherian skippered the Division B boat alongside crew Reigstad. In Division A, the Rainbow Wahine collected 51 points to finish third in their group. Skippers Schuessler and Bailey split duties in the Division A races, teaming up with crews Turner and Tokoyoda.

UH just missed out an automatic berth to to the women's national championship – awarded to the top two finishers in the fleet race – and now await word on a possible at-large selection.
