Rainbow Wahine Place 11th in the ICSA National Semifinals

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine sailing team fell just shy of the cutline concluding its season with an 11th-place finish in the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championship Western Semifinals.

After finding themselves in 12th place at the conclusion of day one, the Rainbow Sailors were just 10 points back from qualifying for the finals round. But despite a spirited effort, UH did not reach the top nine to advance, ultimately finishing with a total of 189 points, a mere six points behind 9th-place Tulane. Bowdoin College led the 18-team semifinal field with 106 points.

The sailors were able to finish the semifinal round with 20 total races, split evenly between the A and B divisions. Martha Schuessler and Amanda Turner represented the A division for Hawai'i, while Stella Taherian and Elin Reigstad raced in the B division. Ann Tokoyoda also appeared in a pair of races for the 'Bows.

The All-PCCSC duo of Schuessler and Turner ended the competition with 101 points, placing 11th in the A division. The duo finished strong with top-six finishes in three of the four races on Saturday. .

Taherian and Reigstad couldn't replicate their day one success, finishing with 88 points and placing ninth in the B division. After three top-four finishes in their first six races, the pair finished no higher than 10th in each of the final four races on day two.

Although UH's season came to an end in its semifinal elimination yet again, the Rainbow Wahine extended their nationals appearance streak to five in a row, and 23nd appearance overall.

The regatta was the curtain call for head coach Andy Johnson after a decorated 36-year career at the helm of UH sailing. Johnson, who was inducted into the ICSA Hall of Fame in 2012, led UH to a pair of national titles and more than 20 conference titles while mentoring nearly two dozen All-Americans and four Olympians.
