BeachBows Defeat Santa Clara And Oregon To Cap Senior Weekend

HONOLULU — The No. 16 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team closed out its regular season and a flawless home-stand with a pair of victories on Sunday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. The Rainbow Wahine (17-12) swept Santa Clara 5-0 in the morning before defeating Oregon 4-1 in the evening finale to cap Senior Weekend

Following the televised match against the Ducks which improved the BeachBows to 4-0 on the weekend, Hawai'i honored 10 seniors in an emotional Senior Night ceremony: Sydney Amiatu, Sarah Burton, Emily Heintzelman, Julia Lawrenz, Caprice Lorenzo, Jesse Mann, Tessa Marocco, Sydney Miller, Kristen Serrano, and Emily Uhrinak

In the morning dual, Hawai'i secured its second sweep of the weekend by dispatching Santa Clara in straight sets on all five courts. At the No. 4 flight, Lorenzo and Serrano battled through extra points in both frames to edge Alexandra Urbina and Ciara Cantlen 26-24, 24-22 in the most competitive flight of the dual. Meanwhile Sydney Miller and Julia Thelle delivered the most dominant performance in a  21-16, 21-8 win at No. 3 over Noelle Niederman and Mandy Hansen.

Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile took the top flight, while Heintzelman and Kiera Cornman (No. 2) and Burton and Sophie Buschmann (No. 5) also won in straight sets to complete the sweep. The win improved Hawai'i's all-time series record against the Broncos to an unblemished 4-0.

In the evening rematch against Oregon, the Ducks looked to avenge their 4-1 loss to UH from a day prior and got off to a strong start. Oregon took the first point of the dual on the No. 4 court, where Hanna Bjornson and Sofia Taylor defeated Lorenzo and Serrano 21-19, 21-10. The Ducks also extended UH to three sets on the No. 5 court looking to go up 2-0 on UH. But Burton and Buschmann also survived a marathon three-setter at No. 5, rallying from a first-set loss to defeat Natasha George and Landree Coats 21-23, 21-19, 15-13.

The 'Bows took the momentum of gaining that first dual point the rest of the way with straight set wins by the duos of Miller-Thelle and Cornman-Heintzelman before the evening was punctuated at the No. 1 court were Lawrenz and Stedile cruised to a 21-9, 21-16 win over Liz Rossi and Bella Gamache. The Brazilian duo improved their season record to a stellar 21-7 overall, including 19-6 at the No. 1 flight.

The Rainbow Wahine now turn their attention to the postseason, traveling to San Luis Obispo, Calif., for the Big West Championship, April 23-24. The winner of that tournament clinches the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
