BeachBows Claim Heineken Queen’s Cup With Pair Of Wins

HONOLULU  – The  12th-ranked University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team captured the Heineken Queen's Cup with two wins on Saturday at Queen's Beach. The Rainbow Wahine defeated long-time rival Pepperdine, 3-2, and finished off UNC Wilmington, 5-0, to take the title.

The Rainbow Wahine (6-5) concluded the tournament with a 5-1 mark with its lone setback an upset loss to Saint Mary's on Friday. Three of UH's five wins came in shutout fashion. Both Pepperdine and UH finished with 5-1 records with the 'Bows winning the tie-breaker with its head-to-head win.

In the morning match, UH jumped all over Pepperdine who entered the day undefeated in four previous tournament matches. The 'Bows won a trio of matches in straight sets to clinch the dual in speedy fashion. The No. 1 pair of Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile, the No. 3 pair of Julia Thelle and Sophie Buschmann and the No. 4 pair of Sydney Miller and Kiera Cornman each won in two to give UH its third win over the Waves in the last three years. The Waves took courts 2 and 5 in three-set marathons with the dual result already decided.

In its tournament finale, UH took on UNC Wilmington in just the second-ever meeting on the sand between the teams and the first since the 2018 Gamecock Challenge in South Carolina. The BeachBows had little problems with the Seahawks, dispatching them in straight sets on four of five courts. The most efficient of the wins came on Court 4 where Corman and Emily Heintzelman rolled past Sarah Thompson and Sophie Puhala 21-15, 21-6

The only set that went the distance was the top flight but after splitting the first two sets, Lawrenz and Stedile showed their dominance in the final set with a 15-7 win over  Lyvia Trimp and Gracie Sistrunk. The win capped off a stellar weekend for the Brazilian pair who went a perfect 6-0 against the competition at the top of the order.

The Rainbow Wahine now head to the road for the first time this year when they travel to the East Meets West Invitational, March 13-14, in Manhattan Beach, Calif. The 'Bows will play matches against nationally ranked teams Texas, Florida International, LSU and Arizona State in the two-day tournament.
