BeachBows Split On Second Day Of The Heineken Queen’s Cup

HONOLULU  – The 12th-ranked University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team continued the Heineken Queen's Cup by splitting a pair of matches on day two of the tournament at Queen's Beach on Friday. The Rainbow Wahine (4-5) were upset by Saint Mary's, 3-2, in the morning match before bouncing back with a 4-1 win over San Jose State later in the day.

In the first match of the day the BeachBows faced their first test of the tournament versus Saint Mary's. All five courts went to three sets as the teams engaged in intense, back-and-forth action. Each team won two courts with UH's No. 1 pair of Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile and the No. 4 pair of Emily Heintzelman and Sydney Miller picking up points for the BeachBows.

It ultimately came down to the No. 3 flight where SMC secured the clinching point as Bella Reyes and Clarissa Klein got past Julia Thelle and Sophie Buschmann 21-15, 15-21, 15-8. It marked UH's first loss to the Gaels in 10 all-time meetings. It was also just the program's second ever loss at home to an unranked team in 74 instances.

In the second match, UH re-tooled its lineup with changes on four of five flights. The 'Bows responded with a bounce-back 4-1 win, but the Spartans put up a fight. UH went up 2-0 with straight set wins by Kristen Serrano and Sydney Amiatu at Court 5 and a Court 2 victory by Thelle and Buschmann who responded from their loss earlier in the day.

The Spartans, though, extended UH to three sets on the final three courts leaving the outcome still up in the air. UH however sealed the third and decisive point as Miller and Kiera Cornman  outlasted Sabrina Moore and Anna Salmon 16-21, 22-20, 15-10.

The Rainbow Wahine wrap up the Heineken Queen's Cup on Saturday with a pair of matches  The 'Bows will face Pepperdine at 9:45 am before concluding action against UNC Wilmington at 12:15 p.m.
