Men’s Tennis Drops a Match to Cal Poly

Box Score

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (8-8, 1-2 Big West) fell to Cal Poly, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. Despite a strong showing in the middle of the lineup, the Rainbow Warriors were unable to overcome a fast start by the Mustangs in both doubles and singles play.

Cal Poly seized early momentum by capturing the doubles point. The Mustangs secured the advantage with a 6-2 win on Court No. 3 by Raz Haviv and Sean Ferguson over UH's Toa Maeda and Hikaru Takahashi. The point was clinched on Court No. 1, where Jovan Lubbe and Leo Matthysen edged out Timothy Li and Kosuke Nakanishi, 7-5. The match on Court No. 2 featuring Kent Mueller and Adriano Dzhenev was left unfinished with Hawai'i leading 6-5.

In singles competition, the Mustangs quickly extended their lead. Mustangs' Lubbe defeated Li in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, at the No. 1 position. Hawai'i got on the board when Maeda earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Sean Kamyshev on Court No. 5.

However, Cal Poly answered back as Ferguson defeated Takahashi, 6-0, 6-4, on Court No. 6. Aaron Eliscu then provided the clinching point for the Mustangs at the No. 2 spot, battling past Kosuke Nakanishi, 6-1, 7-6.

The Rainbow Warriors will remain in Honolulu for their final home match of the season against UC Davis on Saturday, April 10. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. HT at the UH Tennis Complex. After the match is over, the team will hold a special post-match ceremony to honor seniors Azuma Visaya and Timothy Li for their contributions to the program.
