IRVINE, Calif. – Following a dominant performance on the mound in the series opener against Ball State,
Isaiah Magdaleno earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career Monday.
Magdaleno turned in the best start of his career Thursday night against the Cardinals, setting career-highs with 12 strikeouts over 8.1 innings pitched. He took a shutout into the ninth inning and gave up just an unearned run on two hits while walking two.
The junior retired 17 batters in a row from the third through ninth innings, striking out seven in an eight batter stretch at one point during that run. Magdaleno's 12 strikeouts are the most by a Hawai'i pitcher since 2022 (Blaze Koali'i Pontes) and his 8.1 innings pitched gave him the longest outing by a Rainbow Warrior since 2023 (
Randy Abshier).
Magdaleno's outing set the tone for an incredible weekend for the UH pitching staff, as the 'Bows pitchers allowed just one earned run over 36.0 innings for a 0.25 ERA while striking out 46 batters and walking just seven.
The Los Angeles native ranks 22nd nationally and tied for first in the Big West with 25 total strikeouts. He's worked at least five innings in all three of his starts and owns a 2.79 ERA and is holding opponents to a .149 batting average on the year with just 10 hits allowed in 19.1 innings.
