MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — The No. 13 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team wrapped up the East Meets West Invitational with losses to a pair of ranked opponents at the Manhattan Beach Pier on Saturday. The Rainbow Wahine (7-8) fell to No. 12 LSU in a tight 3-2 loss that came down to the final court, before falling to No. 8 Arizona State 4-1 in the final match of the tournament.
The BeachBows and the Tigers traded dual points to start the matchup. After LSU took the first dual point with a 21-18, 21-14 win at court one,
Sydney Miller and
Caprice Lorenzo responded by tying up the dual with a win at court two. Miller and Lorenzo took set one 23-21, before winning a much-quicker 21-10 set two to tie the dual up at 1-1. The Tigers won court five 21-10, 21-12, but the BeachBows again tied up the dual with
Julia Lawrenz and
Izadora Stedile's 21-17, 24-22 win at court one.
At the deciding court three,
Sydney Amiatu and
Sarah Burton won set one 21-17, but LSU pair Camryn Chatellier and Aubrey O'Gorman stormed back to take set two 21-17 and set three 15-11 to clinch the dual for the Tigers. LSU ties up the all-time series with UH 5-5, with wins in each of the last two matchups.
In UH's final match of the tournament, the BeachBows fell behind early as Arizona State claimed two straight-set wins at court two (21-19, 21-9) and court four (21-18, 21-19).
Emily Heintzelman and
Kiera Cornman responded by taking down ASU pair Kendall Whitmarsh and Olivia McElroy 21-19, 21-12 at court five to put UH within striking distance in the dual at 2-1.
The deciding points at courts one and three were each settled in the third set. At court one, Lawrenz and Stedile rebounded from a 21-19 set one loss to take set two 21-15, but ASU pair Ava Kirunchyk and Samaya Morin took set three 15-9 to clinch the dual for the Sun Devils. At court three, Amiatu and
Sophie Buschmann took the first set 23-21, but dropped back-to-back sets 21-11, 15-13 to ASU duo Reagan Hope and Daniella Kensinger.
Up next for the Rainbow Wahine is the Big West Challenge, March 20-22, as UH will take on all six of its conference foes in Long Beach, Calif.
