Baseball Swept In Doubleheader vs. Wichita State

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to close out its series against Wichita State, falling 13-3 in the opener and 7-1 in game two Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors still split the four-game series with the Shockers, winning 7-6 in come-from-behind fashion on Thursday, and 4-2 on Friday night.

Game 1: Wichita State 13, Hawai'i 3

Wichita State used an 11-run explosion in the third inning to hand Hawai'i a 13-3 loss in the opener of the doubleheader.

Alex Ulloa delivered two three-run doubles to highlight the 11-run third inning as the Shockers scored seven unearned runs following an error on a potential double play ball with one out in the frame. The first seven runs – four of them earned – of the inning were charged to UH starter Liam O'Brien, who was chased from the game with one out. Three more Hawai'i pitchers entered in the frame before Caleb Okada recorded the final out of the inning.

Derek Valdez gave the Rainbow Warriors 2.1 strong innings of relief work with three strikeouts while Christian Hoffman highlighted the offense, going 2-for-2 including an opposite field solo shot to left field for the team's first homer of the year.

Game 2: Wichita State 7, Hawai'i 1

The Shockers again jumped out to an early lead, scoring once in the top of the first and twice in the third to go up 3-0.

UH responded in the bottom of the fourth with a single run, cutting the deficit to 3-1. After Elijah Ickes led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a groundout, Tate Shimao cashed him in with an RBI base knock to pull UH within two.

Wichita State would get the run back the next half inning when Jaden Gustafson hit a solo homer to left field, and Owen Washburn delivered a knockout blow in the seventh with a three-run homer to make it 7-1.

The Rainbow Warriors return to action on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. when they open a four-game series against Ball State.
