BeachBows Fall To No. 4 USC and No. 2 Stanford on Day 2 Of OUTRIGGER Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic

HONOLULU – The 16th-ranked University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team continued action with the second day of OUTRIGGER Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic Friday at Queen's Beach. A day after upsetting preseason No. 1 UCLA, the BeachBows couldn't replicate the same magic against another gauntlet of top teams as UH fell to No. 4 USC and No. 2 Stanford by identical 4-1 scores.

UH's match versus USC was much closer than the score indicated. Three of the five courts went the full three sets. Meanwhile on court 5, Kristen Serrano and Kiera Cornman, the clinching duo from yesterday's upset over No. 1 UCLA, gave USC's Kyra Zaengle and Calinda Kok all they could handle before falling, 21-19, 22-20.

UH's lone point came on Court 4 via Emily Heintzelman and Sydney Miller who rallied past USC's Emily Quincy Stephens and Kaileigh Truslow, 15-21, 21-15, 15-13. It was the tandems' second three-set victory of the weekend.

The BeachBows' second match of the day pitted them against No. 2 Stanford. The Cardinal notched its second win of the weekend by taking care of UH in straight sets on a trio of courts to clinch the dual. UH's Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile moved up to the top flight for the first time this season and showed no adverse effects, nearly taking down Kelly Belardi and Ruby Sorra before ultimately succumbing 21-15, 18-21, 15-10.

Down 4-0, the BeachBows were able to garner the final point at Court 5 as Serrano and Cornman rebounded from their tight loss earlier in morning by rallying past Elena Fisher and Chloe Hoffman, 14-21, 26-24, 15-10. The freshman-senior duo has now beaten the pairs from the top two teams in the country on consecutive days.

The OUTRIGGER Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic concludes Saturday with the final seven matches of the round-robin tournament. UH will play No. 9 Cal at 1:30 p.m. before taking on No. 7 LMU at 4:00 p.m.
