LĪHU'E, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team completed the third and final round of the 49
th John A. Burns Intercollegiate Saturday with a 296 total after a final round 885 to finish in 19
th place.
The tournament was held at Ocean Course Hokuala for the fifth consecutive year and on the island of Kaua'i for the 12
th straight year.
Loyola Marymount went wire-to-wire to capture its first Burns Intercollegiate title, besting a field loaded of Top 100 teams including seven in the Top 50. The Lions, ranked No. 71 in the Scoreboard rankings, finished with a 10-under 830 total, beating out No. 32 Texas A&M and No. 38 UNLV by five strokes for the title.
Individually, LMU's Trevor Algya took medalist honors with an 8-under 202 title, one stroke ahead of San Diego State's Harry Takis.
Nathan Szpakowicz and
James Whitworth each carded a final round 4-over 74 to finish in a tie for 58
th place at 219. Freshman
Alec Hilgers posted his best round of the tournament at 3-over 73 and finished 231 for 105
th place.
Dane Watanabe carded 75 and tied for 67
th at 10-over 220 while freshman
Cameron Combado shot 82 and placed 110
th at 236.
Two others are competing as individuals –
Chris Salem (79=234, T-109
th) and
Quinn Murray (84=254, 111
th).
The Rainbow Warriors will next compete in the Wyoming Desert Classic, Feb. 23-25 in Palm Desert, Calif.
