IRVINE, Calif. — The fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team fell to No. 4 Cal 16-8 to open the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Friday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.
UH was led offensively by Agatha Weston and Ema Vernoux with two goals each, while Daisy Logtens went the distance in the cage and registered nine saves and one steal.
Cal started the match with two quick goals, before Ariadna Temprano Xambó found the back of the cage to get UH on the board. The Golden Bears added two scores and the 'Bows faced an early 4-1 deficit.
The teams traded goals in the second quarter, starting with Vernoux who scored on the power play in her return to action. Cal scored, but Sienna Walker responded with a goal 16 seconds later. The Golden Bears added another score, before Klapsianou netted the final score of the half at the 2:50 mark, cutting the deficit to 6-4 at halftime.
UH tallied three goals in the third quarter on scores from Weston, Vernoux, and Raha Peiravani. Cal erupted for seven goals in the period and pushed its lead to 13-7.
UH was outscored 3-1 in the fourth quarter with its lone goal from Weston, and the Rainbow Wahine fell to 5-3 on the season.
UH resumes action in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Saturday against No. 11 UC Irvine at 10:00 a.m. Hawai'i Time (noon Pacific Time) at the Anteater Aquatics Center.
