IRVINE, Calif. — The fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team defeated No. 11 UC Irvine 11-6 on Day 2 of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Saturday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.
With the win, UH extended its streak to 27 consecutive victories against Big West opponents dating back to Feb. 3, 2024.
Freshman Ariadna Temprano Xambó matched her season high with a team-best four goals and six points. Daisy Logtens recorded five saves in the cage as UH's defense held UC Irvine to 6-for-25 shooting from the field.
UH stormed out the gates with an electric five-goal first quarter. Raha Peiravani scored 22 seconds into the contest, followed by a power-play goal from Temprano Xambó. After UC Irvine got on the board, the Rainbow Wahine responded with a 3-0 scoring run. Camille Radosavljevic scored, Gabrielle Doyle converted on the power play, and Asimina Klapsianou capped the surge with 18 seconds left in the quarter. The Anteaters added a score and UH held a 5-2 advantage.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the second frame with Temprano Xambó netting her second goal of the contest. UC Irvine connected for two goals in the quarter and trimmed UH's lead to two.
The Anteaters started the second half scoring with a goal at the 6:05 mark of the third period to pull within one. Defenses took control of the quarter as neither team surrendered a goal over the next five minutes. The 'Bows put the scoring drought to an end with a goal from Agatha Weston on a power play with 43 seconds left in the quarter, and UH restored its two-goal cushion.
UH pulled away in the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals from Temprano Xambó. The freshman completed her hat trick on a 6-on-5 advantage and added another goal on the ensuing possession. UC Irvine scored, but the Rainbow Wahine added two insurance goals from Weston and Tea Brandon, and UH improved to 6-3 on the season.
UH concludes the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Sunday with a matchup against No. 13 Fresno State in the fifth-place match at 8:30 a.m. Hawai'i Time (10:30 a.m. Pacific Time) at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
