Rainbow Sailors Open Spring Season At Rose Bowl Regatta

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team started the season early this year, placing eighth in the Rose Bowl Regatta on Jan. 3-4 in Long Beach, Calif.

Competing in this event for the first time since they placed 12th in 2023, the 'Bows managed to improve on their previous standing and finish in the top third of the 24-team field they faced. A total of 12 races took place over the weekend, split evenly between A and B divisions. After spending a majority of the competition in a mid-table position, three top-five finishes in their last four races powered them up to 106 points, just three points ahead of ninth place.

Erik Anderson and Amanda Turner's 55 points in the A division included four top-ten finishes along with a fourth-place finish to close out competition. Everett McAvoy and Stella Taherian raced in the B division, narrowly edging out the A division's placement with 51 points. The duo hit their stride in their last two races where they finished in second and fourth to end the weekend. Brown University captured the regatta with an event-low 42 points.

The coed and women's team will be competing next at home when they host the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite on Jan 17-18 at Ke'ehi Lagoon.
