LA JOLLA, Calif. —The fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team opened the Triton Invitational with a 17-9 victory over Concordia on Friday at Triton Pool in La Jolla, Calif.
Sophomore Gabrielle Doyle led the Rainbow Wahine (3-1) with a career-high four goals, while Agatha Weston recorded her third hat trick of the season. Daisy Logtens started in the cage and posted two saves, followed by Nalani Yim who added four saves while playing in the second and third quarters, and Evelyn Miller closed out the match with three saves.
UH wasted no time and opened the contest with three straight goals from Tara Logan, Raha Peiravani and Doyle. Concordia netted two scores before Karly Frangieh scored her first goal as a Rainbow Wahine on a power play. The Golden Eagles added another goal, but UH responded with back-to-back scores from Weston and Doyle to take a 6-3 lead after the first period.
Freshman Sienna Walker recorded her first collegiate goal in her debut at the 6:45 mark of the second quarter to jumpstart a dominant period for the 'Bows. Weston converted a penalty shot, Frangieh followed with another power play goal, and Doyle capped the half with her third goal to secure her first career hat trick. Yim surrendered just one goal in the period as UH carried a 10-4 advantage into halftime.
UH added two goals in the third quarter with scores from Ariadna Temprano Xambó and Alia Burlock. Concordia matched UH with two goals of its own and the Rainbow Wahine lead remained at six.
UH put the game away with a five-goal fourth quarter. Doyle netted her fourth goal of the afternoon, followed by Weston's hat trick goal at the 6:23 mark. Walker, Esmee Roijen and Asimina Klapsianou added insurance goals down the stretch and UH improved to 3-1 on the season.
UH continues pool play in the Triton Invitational on Saturday and will face Big West rival UC Irvine at 10:00 a.m. Hawai'i Time (noon Pacific Time) at Canyonview Pool. The winner will advance to the semifinals to face UCLA or Arizona State at 3:50 p.m. (5:50 p.m. PT) at Triton Pool. The loser will play in the seventh-place bracket at 3:20 p.m. (5:20 PT) at Canyonview Pool.
