Swim & Dive Splits Dual Meets vs. BYU

HONOLULU–The University of Hawai'i swimming and diving teams split their dual meets against BYU on Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The Rainbow Wahine defeated the Cougars, 163-136, while the Rainbow Warriors finished strong but fell short to BYU, 167-133.

For the Rainbow Warriors, Karol Ostrowski earned the most points in the dual meet, winning three individual golds while leading off the winning men's 400 freestyle relay team. He racked up a  total of 789.8 total points. The speedy Ostrowski won the 50 backstroke (21.49), the 50 freestyle (19.63) and recorded a personal best in the 50 butterfly (20.91). In the 50 free, Ostrowski came within .06 of tying his own DKAC record of 19.57 which he set last season in 2025.

Korey Tiell edged out BYU's Tanner Nelson to clinch the gold in the 200 backstroke. Tiell touched the wall at 1:48.34 for the win.


The 'Bows closed out the meet by capturing the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 2:54.98--over three seconds faster than the Cougars. Ostrowski led off the relay swimming a 43.68 to gave the 'Bows a solid lead which Finn Brophy (43.46), Victor Dagenais (44.14) and Regan Richardson (43.70) held on to for the victory. 

Men's diver Juan Esteban Ramirez Tamayo swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. He led off the meet by winning the 1-meter with a total score of 338.40. He then held on to win the 3-meter amassing a total score of 386.18 points which propelled him into the UH record book with the ninth-highest point total in the 3M.  UH's Oliver Wignall captured bronze in both events, tallying 292.35 points in the 1M and a 345.83 points in the 3M, Tristan Rodriguez finished in fifth in both events with a 219.68 score in the 1M and a 345.83 in the 3M. 

The Rainbow Wahine won six individual events. Holly Nelson led all women's swimmers with a meet-high 720.0 points. She won three individual golds and a relay silver. Nelson recorded wins in the 50 freestyle (22.84), the 100 free (49.72) and the 50 butterfly in a personal best time of 24.07. UH's Zofia Tyminska finished third overall with 680.3 points winning a gold and three silvers. Tyminska won the 200 breaststroke clocking in at 2:17.65. Her silver medals came in the 50 breaststroke (28.96), the 200 individual medley (2:06.06) and she swam the breaststroke leg of the second-place 400 medley relay (3:43.47).

Aziza Meyer won the 50 backstroke with a personal-best time of 25.88. Rebekka Luoto edged out Tyminska to win the 50 breaststroke with a time of 28.76 and Kailee Chow won the 200 butterfly 2:04.16.

The women's diving team dominated both the 3-meter and 1-meter springboard events sweeping the top five places in both. In the 3-meter, Lovisa Gustavsson led the charge, seizing gold with a total of 323.03 in six dives. Macie Wheeler claimed silver with a score of 307.80 while Avery Coates finished in third scoring 284.48 total points. Ruby Pickron tallying 278.18 while Keira Chandler earned 240.30 total points to start the meet. In the 1M, Wheeler clinched the top-spot recording a 289.65 score while Gustavsson finished in second with 274.65 points. Coats was third finishing with 249.53 points while Pickron posted 243.45 for fourth and Chandler tallied a score of 234.83 for fifth place.

The Hawai'i swimming teams will next host Pacific Lutheran on Monday, Jan. 5 at 1:00 p.m. HT at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The Hawai'i swimming and diving teams will honor its 10 seniors (Tim Brown, Tom Caps, Max Gilsenan, Zachary Kohm, Karol Ostrowski, Kailee Chow, Lola Davison, Kathryn Ivanov, Isabelle Meraz and Holly Nelson) after the dual meet against the Lutes.
