SAN DIEGO, Calif – The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team traveled across the Pacific to compete in the Jeff Simon Women's and Open Regatta, placing second and 10th, respectively, in San Diego, Calif., on Jan 24-25.
The Rainbow Wahine fielded one squad in the women's regatta against six other schools from across California. After winning this event for the past four years, they fell just short of extending the win streak to five. They completed 18 races, split evenly between A and B divisions. Kahlia Bailey and Kylie Alexander sailed in the A division, and Elin Reigstad and Jenna Englehart sailed in the B division. The Rainbows won three races, placing in the top two in eight of them, giving them a grand total of 49 points. UC Santa Barbara comfortably secured the event with 27 points.
The Rainbow Wahine also fielded a team in the open regatta, competing against a field of 38 total teams. Also racing in 18 races, their 185 points helped them place in the top third of the competition at 10th. Stella Taherian and Peyton Lieser sailed in the A division and Martha Schuessler, Avery Hogue, and Ann Tokoyoda sailed in the B division. USC won the event with a regatta-low 70 points.
The Rainbow Wahine will be back in action in the Husky Women's Regatta, held in Sand Point, Wash., on Feb 7-8.
