- SFU (2-2), who competes in the Northeast Conference, was scheduled to host the Red Flash Invitational last weekend but the tournament was cancelled due to weather. SFU's match versus Queens was cancelled and its match against NJIT is postponed until a later date.
- SFU dropped a pair of matches at BYU in Provo, Utah to open the season and rebounded with a two-match series sweep of Northern Kentucky in Highland, Ky.
- UH leads the all-time series with Penn State, 19-10, and won the teams' only meeting in State College in the 2002 NCAA Championship semifinals.
- The teams have met 22 times in Honolulu, all in the OUTRIGGER Invitational, which the Nittany Lions have made 23 appearances. The teams have also met seven times in the NCAA Tournament with Hawai'i holding a 5-2 advantage, including in last season's quarterfinals in Columbus, Ohio, which UH won in four sets.
- UH coach Charlie Wade and PSU coach Mark Pavlik have met head-to-head 12 times with Wade holding a 7-5 advantage.
- Pavlik previously announced this season will be his last after 32 seasons at PSU. Pavlik is Division I-II's active wins leader with 698 and with two more wins, he'll become the fourth men's volleyball coach to reach 700 along with UCLA's Al Scates (1,239), Ball State's Don Shondell (769), and Ohio State's Pete Hanson (712).
- Hawai'i (7-1) is coming off a pair of two-match series sweeps of Rockhurst and Roberts Wesleyan. UH played two doubleheaders against the teams.
