MORAGA, Calif. – The Hawai'i women's soccer team fell into an early hole and couldn't respond in a 3-0 loss at Saint Mary's to close out a two-match Northern California road trip Sunday.
The Rainbow Wahine surrendered goals in the sixth and 40th minutes in the first half before a second-half goal by the Gaels put the match out of reach.
The Gaels wasted no time jumping in front, scoring in the sixth minute to make it 1-0. Ashlyn Vaughn scored off of an over the top pass from Emmie Ennis to get the scoring started, then in the 40th minute Jessie Hawes put one in off her right foot following a corner kick to make it 2-0.
Saint Mary's added to its lead in the 60th minute, when Savannah Schwarze converted off of an Aleiyah Schexnayder cross to make it 3-0.
Cate Sheahan added to her conference-leading shot attempts total with a team-high four to give her 30 on the season, while
Krista Peterson put a pair of shots on frame coming off the bench. UH's keepers again split time in the net, this time with
Brianna Chirpich and
Julia Ortega seeing action. A native or Moraga, Ortega made three saves in the second half in her return home.
The Rainbow Wahine return home to host Eastern Washington Thursday at 6 p.m. at Waipi'o Soccer Stadium.
