HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i swimming and diving teams hosted their annual Green/White meet. UH's White Team prevailed over the Green Team, 191.5 – 149.5 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex on Friday night.
Hawai'i's men's and women's diving teams started the intra-squad competition with their first five of 10 total dives. The divers completed their final five dives during the intermission of the swimming events. The 10-dive format included 1 and 3-meter springboard dives and platform dives. Last season's Men's Big West Diver of the Year
Juan Esteban Ramirez Tamayo won the event which combined both the men's and women's teams together. Tamayo finished with a total of 517.7 points. His high score of 69.0 on a forward 2½-somersaults, 1 twist pike came in round seven on the 3M board. It was the highest scoring dive of the night. Newcomer
Oliver Wignall finished second with a total of 446.7 points with his forward 2½-somersaults, 1 twist pike garnering his highest score of 56.55 coming on his final dive. Women's diver
Lovisa Gustavsson finished third, tallying a total score of 443.95. Her highest scoring dive came on her eighth of the night on an inward two-and-a-half somersault tuck that earned a score of 63.45.
The White Team won nine events while the Green Team took seven. Highlighting the evening's events was the men's and women's 50 free. The women's 50 free saw the Green Team's
Holly Nelson edge out newcomer
Rebekka Luoto three times in the prelims, semifinals and super final, while the White Team's
Karol Ostrowski held off teammate, newcomer
Tim Brown three times to capture the men's 50 free crown.
The meet was filled with extremely close races in the pool. The White Team's Brooke Bennet held off fellow White teammate, Gaby Kelly in the 500 Free, 5:03.83-to-5:04.70. In the women's 300IM, two White Team swimmers battled it out as Mia Blazevska Eminova hit the wall just before teammate
Carlotta Ingenerf, 3:18.61-to-3:19.08.
In the Men's 150 Butterfly, the Green Team's
Aleks Tomaszewski finished 1/100
th of a second in front of Green teammate
Zane Johnson, 1:19.28-to-1:19.29. Then, in the men's 150 free, the Green's
Victor Dagenais out-raced White's
Finn Brophy by a skosh, 1:12.27-to-1:12.43.
On the women's side, the 150 free was also a hotly contested race with the White Team's Bennett notching her second win of the meet finishing .42 seconds ahead of White teammate
Quincy Key, 1:22.61-to-1:23.03.
Both the men's and women's 150 backstroke ended in extremely close finishes. The women's Green teammates
Aziza Meyer and
Alexa Ozment took one-two with Meyer coming in at 1:31.47 and Ozment finishing with a time of 1:32.21. On the men's side, Green teammates
Korey Tiell and Woobie Kupski finished just 2/100ths of a second apart with Tiell finishing at 1:21.22 and Kupsky coming in at 1:21.24.
The men's and women's swim/dive teams will be back in action on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. HT as they host their first Alumni Meet since 2013. Over 30 Hawai'i alumni are slated to come back to the Duke Kanahmoku Aquatics Complex to compete against the current squad.
