GAME STORYLINES
  • The teams are playing for the Kuter Trophy, which is named for the late General Laurence S. Kuter, who was the first head of the Pacific Air Forces Command in 1957. The trophy has been presented to the winner of the annual game since 1980 when both teams were members of the Western Athletic Conference.
  • Hawai'i currently holds possession of the trophy by virtue of a 27-13 victory in 2023 in Honolulu. Prior to that, AFA gained possession after a 2019 victory at Aloha Stadium.
  • The Kuter Trophy is the first of four rivalry trophies UH will play for this season and the only one it currently holds possession of.
  • AFA leads the all-time series 14-8-1, including a 6-2 mark in games played in Colorado Springs.
  • Three of the eight match-ups in Colorado were decided by one score including the last meeting in 2016 which UH won 34-27 in double overtime, its first win at the academy since 1992.
  • The series began in 1966 with 21 of the 23 meetings in conference play. The teams have played five times in Mountain West play with the Falcons winning three of those contests. In WAC play, Air Force led the series 10-5-1.
  • Hawai'i (3-2, 0-1 MW) has a combined record of 15-16-1 versus the military academies and a 5-18 all-time mark in games played in the state of Colorado.
  • UH is coming off a 23-21 loss to Fresno State last week in a game it had a chance to tie after scoring a touchdown with 0:10 left in regulation. QB Micah Alejado threw a 10-yard TD to Blaze Kamoku but the ensuing 2-point attempt failed.
  • Head coach Timmy Chang has a 2-16 record on the road, including an 0-1 mark in 2025.
  • Air Force (1-2, 0-2) dropped its second straight Mountain West game, falling to Boise State, 49-37 last week in Colorado Springs. QB Liam Szarka threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 111 yards and another score.
  • PK Kansei Matsuzawa has made his last 14 field goal attempts dating back to last season including a perfect 13-for-13 this year, which tied Rigoberto Sanchez's school mark set in 2016 for consecutive field goals to start a season.
  • Saturday's game marks UH's sixth consecutive game week. No other FBS team has played in each of the first six weeks of the regular season.
