Women's Volleyball Falls to UCLA

STANFORD, Calif. — The latest edition in the long-running women's volleyball series between Hawai'i and UCLA ended in a sweep for the Bruins on Saturday at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.
 
The Rainbow Wahine (4-6) dropped their second match in the Stanford Tournament with UCLA (6-3) claiming a 25-12, 27-25, 25-15 victory.
 
The 79th meeting in the series took a somber turn early in the match when UH outside hitter Stella Adeyemi was helped from the court with an injury in the first set. UCLA went on to run away with the set before UH battled back in the second. The 'Bows went up 24-23, but UCLA closed with a 4-1 run to take the set. The Bruins then pulled away in the third to complete the sweep and improved to 41-38 in the all-time series with UH.
 
Miliana Sylvester led the 'Bows with seven kills and Bri Gunderson finished with six. Libero Victoria Leyva posted double-digit digs for the fifth consecutive match and finished with a team-high 15.
 
Ravyn Dash saw her most extensive playing time of the season and contributed the first five kills of her UH career. Adrianna Arquette had four kills and posted 15 assists while sharing setting duties with Audrey Hollis, who finished with 11 assists and two kills.
 
Phekran Kong led UCLA with 12 kills in 20 attempts and Cheridyn Leverette added 10 kills for the Bruins, who hit .301 in the match to UH's .090.
 
UCLA scored the first seven points of the match when Adeyemi went down with an injury and was helped off the court. The Bruins opened up a 10-1 lead and remained in control through the end of the set. UH put together a 5-2 run late in the set to generate some momentum heading into the second.
 
UCLA edged ahead early in the second set but the 'Bows kept pace and caught the Bruins at 16-16. There would be four more ties before UH won an extended rally to take its first lead of the match at 23-22. The 'Bows earned a set point opportunity on a UCLA service errors, but the Bruins forced deuce and converted on their second opportunity to take the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The third set was tight with UH closing to 10-9 on a kill by Tyla Reese Mane. But the Bruins went on a 10-2 run to take control and closed out the match with their eighth block.
 
The Rainbow Wahine finish off the season's first road trip by taking on Texas State on Sunday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time (8 a.m. Hawai'i Time) in their nonconference finale.
