Women's Volleyball Rally Falls Short Against Texas State

STANFORD, Calif. — A spirited comeback bid fell short and the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Texas State to close its stay in the Stanford Tournament on Sunday at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.

After dropping the first two sets to the Bobcats, the Rainbow Wahine closed the third with a 9-0 run to extend the match. Texas State then held off UH late in the fourth in a 25-16, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22 victory.

The 'Bows closed the nonconference portion of the schedule at 4-7 and return home to open their final season in the Big West. UH faces UC Riverside on Friday in the conference opener and takes on UC Davis on Saturday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

UH middle blocker Miliana Sylvester ended the weekend in Northern California by posting a career-high 10 blocks to go along with eight kills against the Bobcats. The Rainbow Wahine collectively posted their second highest block total of the season with 15 and reached double figures for the fourth time.

Cha'lei Reid led UH in kills for the eighth time this season and finished with 16 kills on .379 hitting and served up three aces. Due to injuries on the pins, Bri Gunderson moved outside for much of the match and finished with 12 kills and six blocks.

Adrianna Arquette posted her fourth double-double of the season with 25 assists and 12 digs while sharing setting duties with Audrey Hollis (13 assists), Arquette also contributed four kills in 10 attacks and was in on four blocks. Maddie Way provided a spark off the bench with a season-high five kills and three blocks.

Nina Moorer led Texas State (5-6) with 13 kills and Samantha Wunsch added six kills and four aces.

Two early blocks helped the Rainbow Wahine take a lead in the opening set. Texas State moved ahead with a 6-1 run and took command with three consecutive aces that extended the lead to 21-13 on its way to taking the set.

Texas State put together a 5-1 run midway through the second set to take an 18-11 lead. Sylvester was in on three blocks in a 6-1 UH run that brought the 'Bows to within a point at 20-19. But the Bobcats scored the next four points and earned set point with an ace. A UH service error gave Texas State a 2-0 lead in the match.

Texas State again opened up a lead in the third set and went up 19-16. After a kill from Way, Victoria Leyva spent the next eight points on the service line with Gunderson accounting for two kills and two blocks in the 9-0 UH run to send the match to the fourth. The 'Bows hit .556 in the set with 16 kills and just one error.

UH again fought uphill in the fourth set after Texas State opened up a six-point lead and extended the margin to 22-15. Freshman Jaci Miyasaki put together a five-point service turn that included a block by Gunderson and Way and a Reid kill that closed the gap to 22-21. TSU's Bailey Hanner put away back-to-back kills to end the run and the Bobcats closed out the match for their first win in the all-time series with UH.
