Women's Volleyball Heads to Stanford Tournament

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team heads to Northern California for its first road trip of the season and will play three matches at Stanford's Maples Pavilion starting Friday with a matchup with the host and fourth-ranked Cardinal.
 
The Rainbow Wahine and Cardinal meet at 6:30 p.m. Pacific Time (3:30 p.m. Hawai'i Time) on Friday. UH will also face long-time rival UCLA on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT (11 a.m. HT) and close the weekend against Texas State at 11 a.m. PT (8 a.m. HT) on Sunday.
 
UH will take a four-match winning streak to California after sweeping a two-match series with Portland last week to close its eight-match season-opening homestand.

OPENING SERVE
  • The Rainbow Wahine earned wins in five sets and four sets to sweep last week's series with Portland to even their record at 4-4 on the season.
  • UH claimed two Big West weekly awards on Monday. Libero Victoria Leyva earned her first Defensive Player of the Week award and Cha'lei Reid was voted the conference's Freshman of the Week on Monday.
  • Reid leads the team and ranks fourth in the Big West with 3.71 kills per set. She also leads the team with 18 service aces.
  • Leyva posted a career-high 23 digs in two matches this season and ranks fourth in the conference with 3.90 digs per set.
  • Stella Adeyemi is second on the team with 2.94 kills per set and has three double-doubles on the season.
  • Middle blocker Bri Gunderson entered the week leading the Big West and ranked 40th in the nation with 42 total blocks. The senior averages 1.40 per set.
  • UH leads the Big West with 66 service aces and ranks 18th in the nation with an average a 2.13 aces per set.
  • Over their four-match winning streak, the 'Bows are hitting .268 while holding opponents to .111. They also hold a 39-24 advantage in aces, 43-30 in blocks and 205-166 in digs.

TOURNAMENT NOTES
  • UH and Stanford meet for the first time since 2012 and for the first time at Stanford since Nov. 23, 1997, a four-set Cardinal win.
  • Stanford enters the week at 6-2 and ranked fourth in the AVCA/Taraflex Division I Poll. The Cardinal's losses have come against No. 1 Nebraska and No. 2 Texas.
  • UH and UCLA meet for the 79th time in a series that began on Dec. 14, 1974. UCLA has won the last two meetings and eight of the last 10 dating back to 2011.
  • UCLA is led by former UH men's volleyball standout Alfee Reft. He has a record of 36-30 in three seasons as the Bruins' head coach.
  • UH and Texas State meet for the fourth time in the last four seasons. The 'Bows swept the Bobcats in a 2022 meeting and won two matchups last season.
  • The lone neutral site meeting between UH and TSU was played on Dec. 2, 2005, a UH sweep in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Austin, Texas.
