Women’s Volleyball Extends Sweep Streak to Six

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team delivered another commanding performance in a 25-20, 25-13, 25-13 sweep against San Jose State on Saturday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

UH (14-3, 6-0 Mountain West) completed a sweep of the two-match series with San Jose State (6-11, 1-5) with its sixth consecutive win in straight sets, keeping the Rainbow Wahine alone atop the conference standings.

The run of six straight sweeps and 18 consecutive sets won are the longest such streaks since the 2016 'Bows posted eight sweeps in a row and claimed 25 consecutive sets.

Outside hitter Cha'lei Reid led the UH offense with 11 kills, while junior middle blocker Miliana Sylvester hit .438 with nine kills and three blocks. Maëli Cormier turned in another efficient performance with eight kills and one error in 12 attacks, hitting .593 in the series with the Spartans.

Setter Adrianna Arquette guided the attack with 30 assists, eight digs, and two aces.  Senior outside hitter Panna Ratkai added seven kills and a team-high 12 digs.

Libero Victoria Leyva anchored the back row with nine digs and an ace. Defensive specialist Cameron Holcomb added eight digs and an ace. Kahea Moriwaki served the first two aces of her sophomore season and had extended service turns to help UH pull away in the second and third sets.

UH hit .245, including a .414 performance in the third set, while holding the Spartans to a  negative .033 hitting percentage in the match and .045 in the series.

The 'Bows controlled the net with eight team blocks to San Jose State's seven and held a significant edge at the service line with seven aces compared to the Spartans' three.

San Jose State held early leads in a tightly contested opening set. A service ace by Leyva capped a three-point run that gave UH a 20-14 cushion. San Jose State trimmed the gap to 20-16, but kills from Reid and Cormier kept the 'Bows in control, and Sylvester finished off the set.

UH took control early in the second frame with Moriwaki putting together a six-point service run highlighted by consecutive kills from Sylvester, who also teamed with Reid on a block. After San Jose State pulled within 12-9, the 'Bows answered with a 7-1 surge, punctuated by back-to-back kills from Cormier and Arquette's second ace of the night. The Spartans couldn't return Holcomb's serve on set point and UH took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Service pressure from Leyva and Moriwaki sparked a 10-1 UH run in the third set. Reid put away six kills in 10 attempts in the set, while Sylvester went 4-for-6 without an error and punctuated the win by hammering match point.

The Rainbow Wahine next head on the road for a two-match series at Wyoming. The opener is set for Thursday, Oct. 15 with the rematch on Saturday, Oct. 17 in Laramie, Wyo.
