Women’s Volleyball Tops Wyoming in Four Sets to Sweep Road Series

LARAMIE, Wyo. — A dominant performance in the final frame punctuated the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team's four-set Mountain West Conference victory over Wyoming to complete a series sweep on Saturday at the UniWyo Sports Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine (16-3, 8-0 Mountain West) bounced back from a first-set stumble to defeat the Cowgirls (10-9, 3-5) 26-28, 25-18, 25-22, 25-12. Hawai'i remained perfect in conference play and closed out the match by hitting a staggering .667 with 19 kills and just one error in 27 attacks in the closing set.

Facing an early deficit, the 'Bows battled through 26 tie scores and 11 lead changes over the course of the match to secure the road win and extend its winning streak to a season-high eight straight victories. The streak is the program's longest run since winning 12 in a row to finish the regular season in 2022.

Outside hitter Cha'lei Reid led the UH attack with a match-high 14 kills while hitting a season-best .393. The sophomore took over in the dominant fourth set with seven kills in 10 error-free attacks to headline UH's emphatic finish to the series.

Middle blocker Miliana Sylvester turned in another productive performance at the net with nine kills on .316 hitting and nine blocks, including four solo. The junior finished the weekend with 20 kills on .310 hitting and 22 total blocks (2.44 per set), with nine solo stuffs.

Senior outside hitter Panna Ratkai contributed 11 kills, nine digs, and seven blocks. Setter Adrianna Arquette secured her seventh double-double of the season, distributing 41 assists and coming up with 11 digs while adding four kills and two service aces. Opposite hitter Maëli Cormier continued her run of efficient play with eight kills on .462 hitting. Libero Victoria Leyva anchored the floor defense with 14 digs.

UH held Wyoming to a .096 hitting percentage for the match and limited the Cowgirls to .084 hitting in the series. Addy Thorington led Wyoming with 11 kills, and Paige Lauterwasser posted a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.

Wyoming came up with 10 blocks in the opening set and rallied from a 20-16 deficit to hand UH an opening-set loss for only the fourth time this season. The Cowgirls survived two set points to force deuce and closed out the set with back-to-back blocks.

Hawai'i responded in the second set, cleaning up its execution to hit .360 as a team. The Rainbow Wahine held the Cowgirls to a .059 hitting percentage, with Sylvester in on five blocks to go along with three kills in the set.

Wyoming took a 15-10 lead in the third set before UH rallied to tie it up at 17-17 on a block by Arquette and Sylvester. With the set tied at 20-20, an ace from Arquette sparked a 4-1 UH run, and Rachel Purser put down an overpass to close out the set and give UH the lead in the match.

Hawai'i left no doubt in the fourth set, delivering a nearly flawless offensive performance. The 'Bows converted on 11 of 12 sideout opportunities and posted their highest hitting percentage in a set this season. Cormier complemented Reid's outburst by converting on all four of her attempts, and Tali Hakas closed out the match with her fifth kill of the afternoon.

The Rainbow Wahine return home for a two-match series with UNLV on Oct. 23 and 24 at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
