HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team fell in a sweep to Utah State on Saturday to wrap up the second day of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Utah State (1-1) took control of the first two sets and rallied past the Rainbow Wahine (0-2) in the third in the 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 decision.
Freshman
Cha'lei Reid led the 'Bows 11 kills, delivered an ace and was in on four blocks.
Stella Adeyemi turned in an efficient performance with seven kills on 11 attempts without an error to hit .636 and had seven digs.
Tali Hakas also finished with seven kills and seven digs.
UH also looked to the bench for a spark and middle blocker
Maddie Way scored on all three of her swings in the third set.
Tyla Reese Mane also had three kills and
Leilani Lopez landed an ace on the first serve of her UH career.
Utah State hit .357 as a team led by Tierney Barlow's 14 kills in 20 attacks. Loryn Helgesen and Mara Stiglic added 12 kills each for the Aggies in the first meeting between UH and Utah State since 2014. .
Reid had five kills and an ace early and UH led 15-13 in the first set before Utah State went on a five-point run to take control and continued to pull away to take the set. The Aggies hit .484 in the set to offset UH's .314 hitting.
Utah State took an 13-8 lead in the second and led by as many as seven before UH put together a three-point run to cut the deficit to 23-19. But the Aggies closed out the set from there, finishing with an ace to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
UH shuffled the lineup going into the third and the 'Bows took a 7-4 lead on back-to-back blocks. The 'Bows led 15-10 at the technical timeout but Utah State rallied to tie the set at 16-16 and took the lead with a block. The teams were tied seven more times and and Reid knotted the set at 23-23 with her 11
th kill. But Stiglic scored Utah State's final two points to close out the match.
The tournament concludes Sunday with Marquette facing Utah State at 2:45 p.m., and Rainbow Wahine taking on San Diego in the tournament finale at 5 p.m. San Diego outlasted Marquette in five sets in Saturday's first match and is the lone team at 2-0 in the field.
